In a stunning diplomatic move, Pope Leo XIV has awarded Iran’s ambassador to the Holy See, Mohammad Hossein Mokhtari, the Knight of the Grand Cross of the Pontifical Order of Pius IX, the Vatican’s highest active diplomatic decoration.

Timing Is Everything
The award came just four days after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the Pope in Rome. It arrived while Trump was publicly demanding that the first American-born pope “behave like an American chaplain to American empire” – meaning: bless the bombs, silence criticism of civilian deaths, and endorse U.S. wars.
Pope Leo XIV did the opposite.
He told Trump’s administration: “You do not intimidate me.” He called Iranian civilian casualties “unacceptable.” And then he decorated Iran’s envoy.
What the Vatican Knows
The Holy See is not naive. Pope Leo has condemned Iran’s internal crackdowns. But the Vatican’s diplomatic language is precise: awarding the Order of Pius IX signals that the Church identifies Iran as a necessary negotiating partner for peace – and that the door of dialogue remains open.
That language carries a sharper meaning when the door it keeps open is the one the United States is trying to slam shut.

While the White House posts one-hour loops of Trump saying “WINNING,” Iran is collecting diplomatic honors from the Vatican – the moral capital of the Western world.
Washington demanded isolation of Tehran. The Vatican refused.
Washington demanded a pope who would stay silent on U.S. war crimes. The Vatican refused.
Washington demanded submission. The Vatican chose dignity.
The moral high ground has shifted. And Tehran is standing on it.
