As the US-Israeli war on Iran continues into its second month—with daily airstrikes, the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and the relentless targeting of the nation’s infrastructure—Professor John Mearsheimer has delivered a stark legal and moral assessment of the men directing this aggression.
In a searing interview with the Judging Freedom podcast, Professor John Mearsheimer did not mince words about the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran and the complicity of American leaders in what he called genocide.
“If there were Nuremberg trials where Israelis and Americans were brought before the court, President Trump along with Prime Minister Netanyahu and many of their advisors would be hanged. This is a genocide.”
The renowned political scientist, known for his unflinching analysis of US foreign policy, also addressed the broader criminality of the war:
“The United States and Israel are committing crimes in Iran, and the US is complicit in Israel’s genocide in Gaza too.”
Mearsheimer’s remarks cut through the fog of Western media coverage, naming what international law defines clearly: the deliberate targeting of civilians and the use of starvation as a weapon of war constitute crimes against humanity and genocide.
His invocation of Nuremberg—the post-WWII tribunals that held Nazi leaders accountable—is deliberate. It places the current American and Israeli leadership in the dock of history, alongside those who were judged for crimes against humanity.
